What Map (formerly What map?) is a Cities:Skylines YouTube series created and maintained by BonBonB. It's a daily show in which BonBonB reviews a new map and a new asset on each episode and a theme and a LUT each week.

Format

A What Map video typically lasts around 10 to 20 minutes depending on the content of the reviewed map.

Map (part 1)

Depending on the day of the week, the reviewed map will be :

  • A requested map on Fridays,
  • An old map on Throwback Thursdays,
  • Other maps on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.

After the introduction, BonBonB will typically first quickly show the map resources, start square, Workshop page and requirements before diving into the map and follow all the road network, and then do the same for the rail network if there is one.

Asset review

The quick asset review allows a little break in the show to present an asset with a little cinematic in Assetville. There is no rule as to what asset is selected for the review.

Theme & LUT review

Right after the asset review, the Theme & LUT review will start. One LUT and one Theme is selected every week and will be showcased in all 6 episodes of the week in different part of a scenery city made exclusively for the show. The music in the background is the Flower Waltz by Tchaikovsky while BonBonB tells random fun facts to fill the blanks.

Map (part 2)

After the Asset, Theme & LUT break, the map review continues by examining Ship connections and water flow. Other interesting places are then displayed in more details and and overall view of the forests, detailing or beautiful places are noted.

Rating

A rating is attributed to the map on 3 criteria, each one receiving a mark from 1 to 5 stars on :

  • Aesthetics,
  • Detailing,
  • Game Play potential.

The five stars rating equivalents are given by this table[1]:

/10 Global appreciation Star rating
10 Perfect ★★★★★
9 Excellent ★★★★☆
8 Very good ★★★★☆
7 Good ★★★★½☆
6 Fairly good ★★★☆☆
5 Okay ★★★☆☆
4 Lacking ★★★½☆☆
3 Poor ★★☆☆☆
2 Bad ★★☆☆☆
1 #@$% ★☆☆☆☆

The BonBonB seal of approval is typically distributed for an 11 total stars or more, but can be attributed to any map that BonBonB appreciated well enough for it.[1]
