The James Morrison Bridge was built in 1982 under federal grant money, and it was controversial due to the highway that came with it. With the bridge came a redirection of Highway 1 which at the time ran through public land. Yet when the highway was redirected it ran through what older Native Tribes called ancestral land and one that was protected under a treaty in the 1880's. The Government denied such claims, yet when Barack Obama was elected he renamed the bridge to Aleut Bridge after a Inuit tribe, and the County of Aleutia.
